PTSD, the ADA, and Your Workforce

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) covers post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations for employees with PTSD. The ADAAA of 2008 expanded the definition of disability to include a wide range of conditions that affect a major life activity, such as PTSD.

Some examples of reasonable accommodations for employees with PTSD include:

  • A flexible schedule
  • A separate workspace
  • A leave of absence
  • A support animal
  • White noise or environmental sound devices
  • Noise cancelling headsets
  • Modifications to lighting
  • Written and verbal instructions
  • Checklists
  • Wall calendars

The most suitable accommodation will vary on a case-by-case basis.
