Most employee surveys are a waste of time. Not because surveys don’t work. Because leaders don’t.
Employees take the survey.
▶ They answer honestly (or at least they try).
▶ They point out real issues.
And then…
▶ Nothing happens.
▶ No communication.
▶ No changes.
▶ No acknowledgment.
So what do employees learn?
▶ “Don’t bother next time.”
▶ “Leadership doesn’t care.”
▶ “This place won’t change.”
That’s how you kill engagement.
Now let’s talk about what happens when surveys are taken seriously. When leaders:
▶ Share results
▶ Own the feedback (even the uncomfortable parts)
▶ Take visible action
Everything shifts.
👉 Engagement goes up — because employees feel heard.
👉 Happiness improves — because issues are addressed.
👉 Retention increases — because trust is built.
👉 Productivity rises — because people actually care again.
Employee surveys are not the strategy. What you do AFTER the survey is the strategy. If you’re not ready to act, don’t ask. But if you are? It might be one of the most powerful tools you have as a leader.
