When Accountability Meets Bias: Reflections on the Astronomer CEO Incident

I was doing an “Off Duty Conduct” HR-Management training last week and was asked about the “Astronomer Incident” so I thought this would be a good time to re-share my LinkedIn article and thoughts!

The recent news about Andy Byron, CEO of startup Astronomer, resigning after being caught on the “Coldplay kiss cam” with the company’s Head of HR, Kristin Cabot, sparked a wildfire of online debate. While both Byron and Cabot were placed on leave and Byron has now resigned, the public reaction has unearthed deeper issues that go beyond the viral video.

What’s striking? The disproportionate blame and scrutiny aimed at Cabot, the HR head/ Chief People Officer, compared to Byron, the CEO. Many headlines and comments imply a breach of trust by “HR,” while the CEO’s role and responsibility are either downplayed or overlooked. That is why the heading for this article is about the “CEO Incident”. Let’s unpack why this matters.
